Tabatha Reeves and her husband Michael run Twisted Lane Candles and are changing the fragrance industry with their uniquely scented candles. We sat down with Tabatha to learn more about why she started the company and her experience using CoverWallet.
What does your business do?
We create hand-poured wooden-wicked candles and air fresheners. Our wooden wicks have a different look from other candles, and they serve a functional purpose in creating a larger flame to better melt the wax. We pride ourselves on selling affordable, quality candles and fragrances. We don’t use any dyes or artificial colors, and our jars are reusable.
How did you first start your business?
My husband is in the military. We were living overseas, and I started making candles as a hobby. When we got back to the U.S., we were shopping in a store that had this unique candle that smelled like tobacco and bourbon. My husband really liked it, but it was $35, and he asked me to make it instead. I created the candle myself, and friends and family loved it. I had some leftover candles that I sold at an event near our town, and we realized there was a gap in the market for candles and home fragrance products that weren't fruity, flowery, or overly sweet. Everyone likes their homes and workspaces to smell nice, but not everyone values scents like Cinnamon Bun and Gardenia. Eventually, representatives from the Arkansas State Parks Service approached us inquiring about selling our products in their gift shops. As part of our contract requirements, we created our LLC. I’ve been doing this as a full-time business since 2017.
What types of customers do you work with?
We have three main types of customers. We sell directly to consumers through word of mouth and our online presence. We also sell to businesses. Examples include scotch-scented candles in European pubs, tobacco blends for antique stores and museums, and outdoor scents for professional offices seeking to provide a clean, but unique experience. Lastly, we create custom blends and labeling for wholesale customers. We have worked with museum gift shops, boutiques, and cleaning companies to create products for both resale and promotion.
