Melaine Cassells-Paramore is a teacher who is passionate about helping children nurture their curiosity for S.T.E.M subjects. We sat down with her to learn more about her company SciTech Hub and her experience using CoverWallet.
What does your business do?
We use our S.M.A.R.T program (science, math, art, reading and technology program) to provide, hands-on activities and fun challenges for children ages of 3 and 14 to help improve their love and understanding of these subjects. We also provide tutoring to elementary and middle school children along with SMART activities in a fun, creative way outside of school to help them better grasp and enjoy these subjects. Our goal is to nurture their natural curiosity and cement the knowledge of SMART subjects for future educational endeavours.
Our after school enrichment programs are for children ages 5 - 14 with homework assistance, science activities, arts & craft activities and free tutoring. During school breaks, we provide whole/half-day camps for school-age children and our drop in science program is for any child who enjoys science and wants to participate for a few hours.
Why did you start your business?
I’ve taught chemistry in both private and public schools for 18 years and I have seen a decline in students pursuing S.T.E.M. careers (especially minorities and girls) and an overall apathy towards these subjects and want to be involved in changing this trend. As a teacher, the pressure to follow state-regulated standards and curriculum is very high. This leaves little time for most teachers to perform labs or provide hands-on activities to make learning the concepts more applicable. So I started SciTech Hub to reach children when they are younger and eager to learn and hopefully instill in them, the desire to become lifelong learners and continue in their pursuit of scientific knowledge.
As a business owner, what’s one piece of advice you would give to someone else thinking of starting their own business?
Be patient! If you feel it in your heart, do it, but be patient with yourself and the process. You also need to do your research and make sure that you are supplying a need in the area you want to start your business.
