Why a Former Tesla Employee Decided to Help People Lower Their Carbon Footprint

Absolute sustainability is an energy consulting agency based in Orlando, Florida aiming to help residents and commercial businesses reduce their carbon footprint. We sat down with owner Deedra Simmons to learn more about why she started her business and her experience with CoverWallet.

Tell me about your background, how did you first get started in the renewable energy sector?
I started in California in 2012 with a company called SolarCity which turned into Tesla. I worked for Tesla until last year when I decided to go my own way and start Absolute Sustainability. I wanted to start my own company because I have a very high standard for how I want to get things done, and I knew having my own company would be the best way to do that.

Have you always been passionate about the environment?
It’s definitely been a life-long passion, anytime I see someone litter it gets me really upset to see them taking advantage of our environment. Once I started working for SolarCity that passion just became amplified and rocketed to a whole new dimension.

Why do you think it’s important for people to reduce their carbon footprint?
We only have one Earth, we have to be able to create a safe space for our future generations. I'm about to have a baby and I don't want my son to one day ask me why I didn’t do my part to help save the environment.

What are some simple, everyday things people can do to reduce their energy usage?
Little things can make a big difference. For example, don't leave the water running and take shorter showers. I frequently notice that people still don’t recycle, which is baffling to me, since it’s such a simple solution. At my business, we use products that are all sustainable; we try to minimize the amount of plastic we use, we don’t use any plastics straws. Some of our solutions include providing solar panels to homes and businesses, doing workshops and training on sustainable practices for businesses, conducting energy audits, and installing LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations.

What do you enjoy most about working with your customers?
I feel like I have a mission to help reduce our carbon footprint and make a difference. I sleep well at night knowing that when I leave a customer, not only did I help them, but I did the right thing for the environment as well.

How did you find CoverWallet?
